Unable to resolve chat model with family selection: gpt-4.1

I'm using Spec Kit but I'm frequently seeing VS Code have this error.

I use Github Copilot Pro+. The last few days this happens a lot. I wish I could specify a different model and then fallbacks.

I prefer these models:

• GPT-5.2
• GPT-5.1-Codex-Max
• Claude Sonnet 4.5
• Claude Sonnet 4
• Gemini 3 Pro (Preview)
• Gemini 2.5 Pro

If there was a way to provide a list of fallbacks that would be great.

When I start seeing this error, restarting VS Code doesn't fix the issue. If I wait a few minutes and retry it works again for a while.

Over the last week this happened at least a dozen times.

Same thing started today for me. Even though I choose 'Claude Opus 4.5` it complains about gpt-4.1

I'm a typical Claude user and saw a similiar problem

I'm also seeing this error using VSCode 1.108 with GitHub Copilot 0.36 (latest).
Restarting doesn't help and waiting has no effect at all.

None of these options gave anything:

• Downgrade to an earlier release
  • Tested downgrading to any of the 0.35 choices which only resulted in figure 1.
• Cleaning the cache
  • Make sure GitHub Copilot is updated to latest release (as of writing 0.36.0)
  • Run (win+r) and enter explorer %appdata%\Code\CachedData (the cache for vscode)
  • In vscode, ctrl+shift+p, select the option to Developer: Reload Window
• Signing out and back in
• Switching between models
• Removed the .vscode-folder
  • Close vscode
  • Remove the .vscode-folder from the project
  • Start vscode, only to result in figure 2.
  • Sign in again
  • Test to run the query again after 5 seconds resulted in figure 1.
