The 2026 impact initiatives on Projects page are great, but also make it a lengthy page. Just finding out 1) how many initiatives there are, 2) and learning their titles requires the user to scroll through almost the entire page.

This likely means that many/most readers won't do it. As a result, many readers might not find out about all the initiatives, especially lower in the list, and potentially miss out on ones that might interest them.

This PR proposes a small but nifty UX update to the Projects page:

  • add the list of initiative titles below the intro text of the page ( 2 columns for desktop, 1 column for mobile)
  • use this list as a TOC of sorts, with titles as anchors that take the user to the initiative details once they click/tap on the relevant cell, with smooth scrolling

Keeping this in draft for now, especially in case I got the git branch stuff wrong. Please take a look

LGTM
Maybe include smooth scroll? some may argue superficial, but might help users keep a sense of where they are on the page.
A back to top button would help this page also, appreciate that would be site-wide so maybe outside the scope of this PR.

i personally don't like adding these up top since it makes it longer to scroll to the actual content, and IMO it's not that hard to scroll the page quickly to see see the subheads you might be interested. so i consider it net negative change.

I’m a bit more neutral on this change than Matt, but I lean toward rolling it back. From a UI POV, the TOC feels a little heavy. I think that’s because the font weight is medium and it’s underlined, which makes it stand out more than anything else on the page.

I also didn’t really feel like scrolling was much of an issue. Each section feels pretty “light” since it’s narrow, centered, and easy to skim. The table of contents ends up being this thing you have to scroll past before getting to the actual valuable content. I’m pretty indifferent overall. If this is an improvement, it feels very marginal.

I’d consider putting it in an accordion so people can expand it if they want to use the TOC. I’m not sure I love having it expanded by default.

From a less-is-more and KISS philosophy, I’d probably skip it, but I don’t feel super strongly either way. I’ll leave it up to you guys and Yashraj if anyone else has strong feelings.

Overall, very open to making iterative changes. That said, if there's more strong NACKs on this, I don't mind abandoning it or have someone else take a shot. No biggie.

good point, would be trivial to make it lighter on the eyes. also happy to make tweaks that reduce its footprint generally. was a super-quick MVP and draft PR.

This could be a good middle-ground, though I'm not convinced it's needed, I'm open to it.

Actually, this addition would make the page length less relevant while technically adding no more than ~5% to its length. For reference, the proposed TOC (on desktop) takes the ~same vertical space as the abstract banner image, but adds a lot more value – 1) the ability to see the entire list of initiatives at a glance, 2) ability to quickly navigate to whichever initiative(s) catches reader's interest, plus 3) anchor for easy sharing right at the top...

This is already a long page, and though we might have the patience and familiarity to scroll or read through the entire thing, others might not.
